Welcome to Villa Storfors, for the ultimate Swedish experience

About Villa Storfors
Villa Storfors was built in 1875, at a time when the iron industry was flourishing. Back then, the house was home to the engineers who helped drive that development. The park and the surrounding buildings are like an open-air museum that brings this rich history to life.
Much of that past can still be seen around Villa Storfors: the oldest fire station in Värmland (now a museum), Sweden’s oldest hydroelectric power station still in operation, a former bathhouse with sauna, a historic laundry house, a water wheel with a stamping mill (once used to produce charcoal), a stately manor house (the director’s residence) and a park with a remarkable collection of century-old trees.
Villa Storfors lies in a unique setting… Bergslagen!
It is Sweden’s largest connected lake district: a water paradise set against beautiful greenery and rugged wilderness. It is also one of the most mineral-rich areas in the world, which results in spectacular flora and fauna. An inviting place for lovers of nature and culture alike.

Discover the area
Plenty of (historic) sights, viewpoints, museums, castles, manor houses and towns, plus canoeing, cycling, walking, hiking, downhill and cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing and much more. The area has everything you need for a great stay.
The landscape is varied: from gently rolling hills to rugged, rocky terrain, with water everywhere (large and small lakes and the canals that link them), vast (ancient) forests alternating with farmland, and the famous red Swedish houses.
In the past, iron and mineral mining was very important here. Transport to Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake, went mainly by water, so canals and locks were built between the many lakes. A spectacular example can be seen at Bjurbäcken, about ten minutes away by car: the locks there overcome a difference in height of no less than 20 metres. They are more than 150 years old and still in use.

History
The Bjurbäcken locks are a picturesque, historic lock system on the Filipstad–Karlskoga waterway. To make transport between the Filipstad mining district and Kristinehamn easier, a canal with locks was built along the Bjurbäcken rapids between 1853 and 1857. In season you can visit the lock café, and an easy walking trail runs along the canal.
